Greg Smogard. Ph.D. is the Assistant Vice President of Innovation and Business Development at the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus. He is responsible for leading the campus’ business engagement efforts with a focus on creating and enhancing mutually beneficial partnerships with businesses by leveraging the university’s resources and innovation expertise.

Some key projects led by Smogard include a program that connects student consulting teams with local businesses and community organizations, a workshop that extends the campus’ critical-thinking program to local businesses and nonprofit organizations, and a conference series focused on “cutting edge” topics, such as climate change and “Fintech,” or finance technology.

Smogard chairs a twice-monthly community engagement and business development meeting involving faculty, staff and administrative representatives, and he serves on the advisory board of the business development group GrowFL.

Smogard joined the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus in the summer of 2018. Prior to that, he worked with the Center for International Business Education and Research at the University of Miami Business School, serving as director of Innovators for the Americas, an experiential entrepreneurship course that partnered Miami students and professors with their counterparts in four Latin American universities.

He also participated in the Global Business Consulting program, which enabled MBA students to consult with international corporations.

Throughout his career, Smogard has worked with Fortune 500 companies and global brands in more than 40 countries and held management positions at American Express’ Latin American Division and Blockbuster/Viacom. He is the author of, “A World of Opportunities for Aspiring Entrepreneurs: Creating Your Own Job in the New Normal.”

Smogard earned a bachelor’s degree in history and political science at Minnesota State University-Moorhead, a master’s degree in psychology at St. Cloud State University and a PhD in international studies at the University of Miami. In 2013, he was recognized as a Minnesota State University-Moorhead Distinguished Alumni.
